About the coffee producer
Doondu Estate, located in Kiambu County near Nairobi, is a 238-hectare coffee farm renowned for its exceptional SL28 coffee. Originally established by British colonists, it is now owned by Sasini, a Kenyan-operated company managing six estates, with Doondu being the largest. The estate uses natural processing and extended anaerobic fermentation to produce coffee with remarkable flavour and complexity.
Sasini is deeply committed to supporting its workers and the local community. Employees benefit from living quarters, early childhood education, union membership, and wages above the minimum standard. Sasini has also contributed to improving the local Njenga Karume Primary School by building a computer lab to equip students with essential IT skills for the modern world.
Kiambu County provides ideal conditions for coffee farming. Its iron-rich volcanic soils, high altitudes of up to 2,000 meters, and cool nights allow cherries to ripen slowly, enhancing their acidity and complexity. Despite urban challenges, Doondu Estate continues to uphold Kenya’s proud coffee-growing heritage.
About the coffee processing
This coffee undergoes extended fermentation in oxygen-free conditions to enhance acidity and complexity. Ripe cherries are carefully selected, with poor-quality ones removed through floating in clean water. The best cherries are packed into vacuum-sealed GrainPro bags and fermented for three days. After fermentation, the cherries are dried on raised African beds under the sun for up to six weeks until they reach an ideal moisture content of 12.5%. Once dried, the cherries are rested before undergoing secondary processing, including hulling, grading, and hand-picking, ensuring a high-quality coffee with exceptional flavour and character.
