About the Coffee Producer:

Force of Nature is our first coffee from Burundi. Although Burundi is a relatively young coffee producing country compared with its East African neighbours, we were blown away by the quality of this naturally processed Red Bourbon lot when we first cupped it this summer.

This coffee delivers a cherry like sweetness and mild plum like acidity, finishing with a black tea note. Although it’s naturally processed, the body stays silky and perfectly balanced, making it an easy drinking option for both filter and cold brew.

As one of the world’s poorest countries, Burundi relies heavily on tea and coffee. Lack of infrastructure and periods of political instability remain major challenges for coffee growers. Force of Nature is the collective result of the hard work of 173 smallholders from the Nyabiraba Commune and was processed by Migoti Coffee.

Founded in 2015, Migoti has consistently supported over 1,300 farmers, offering tools and training on plant maintenance. They also cultivate and distribute coffee seedlings, and help recipient farmers care for these young trees. Over the last year, Migoti planted another 44,208 seedlings, bringing the cumulative total since operations began to more than 350,000 trees.

About the Coffee Processing:

Burundi’s coffee harvest season runs from March to July. After harvest, cherries are sold to the washing station, where they are weighed, floated, and grouped by grade and region of origin.

Migoti Coffee operates two washing stations in the mountains of Bujumbura Rural Province. Here, the cherries are sorted and left to ferment for one day.

The final—and longest—step is drying. The coffee is spread directly on raised beds to dry in the sun for 3–4 weeks, similar to other African naturally processed coffees. It is covered at night and whenever rain is expected, while teams carry out further sorting as they turn the coffee regularly. Finally, the coffee is hulled and sorted once more before being bagged and exported.
